Gilla Band – Alogia
Alogia is a clinical term for poverty of speech, and Dara Kiely was diagnosed with schizophrenia while writing these lyrics, and named the song after one of the symptoms.
It’s the latest (and suppose the last) preview of Gilla Band’s fourth studio album “Pugnello”, due September 25 via Rough Trade Records UK, and it follows lead singles Giraffe (W22) and Placeholder (W28). The Dublin quartet, Kiely on vocals, Alan Duggan Borges on guitar, Daniel Fox on bass, Adam Faulkner on drums, recorded the album between 2022 and 2026 across three Dublin studios, self-produced with Fox handling recording and mixing. The video for “Alogia” is directed by Cuan Roche.
In the four years since “Most Normal”, the band scattered into side projects: Kiely picked up painting, Faulkner drummed for Lankum on tour, Fox became one of the more in-demand producers in Irish guitar music working with Sprints, Lambrini Girls, and Mandy, Indiana. Duggan Borges launched a solo outlet called the Null Club with Valentine Caulfield, Faris Badwan, Miss Grit, and Elucid. What gets me about “Alogia” is how much fun it sounds having with a subject this heavy. It’s genuinely dancey, built on chanted hooks and dark, self-aimed jokes, fantasies about the steady routine of being an accountant sitting right next to lines about having a midlife crisis more than once. Kiely put it plainly: “I thought I could just walk off the old mental illness but alas!”
I’m still not sure if “Alogia” is one of their funniest songs or one of their saddest.
